The most effective safety measure is a design that removes the hazard. During design we review proposals for foreseeable risks in construction, maintenance and eventual demolition — working at height, confined spaces, temporary works and stability, lifting, demolition sequence, existing services, asbestos and other hazardous materials in older buildings — and we work with the designers to eliminate or reduce them at source. We prepare the pre-construction information and the initial safety and health plan so that tenderers price a properly described risk profile rather than discovering it after appointment.

Once work starts we review the contractor's safety and health plan, method statements and risk assessments against the actual works, and check that the coordination arrangements between contractors on site are real. Site inspections cover access and edge protection, scaffolding and temporary works, excavation support, plant and lifting operations, electrical safety, fire precautions, welfare facilities, personal protective equipment and site induction and training records. Findings are reported with a required action, a responsible person and a date, and closed out at the next visit rather than repeated.

Compliance has to be demonstrable. We maintain the documentation that proves it: notifications, appointments, plans and revisions, inspection reports, incident and near-miss records, training and induction registers, and statutory certification for plant and installations. At completion we compile the health and safety file so that the people who will maintain and eventually alter the building inherit the information they need. Throughout the project the client receives clear reporting on the safety position, outstanding actions and any issue that requires their intervention as duty holder.
